THE FAMOUS CAPOs (CEJILLAs) from JUAN VARGAS

Juan Vargas Muñoz was born in Coin in the province of Malaga. In the thirties of the 20th century he was first employed by the newspaper La Razón. He was a creative and excellent craftsman and set up his own workshop. His small workshop was located behind his house in the street San Pedrito No. 78 in the neighbourhood of San José de Flores.

Here his original capos/cejillas and castanets were made.

Over the years, plastic became popular and Vargas expanded his work to include combs and earrings, which like other of his creations soon became world famous. The first capo/cejilla that made him famous wore the initials R. M. - Don Ramón Montoya. The capo/cejilla was made of bone and decorated with mother of pearl ornaments. With this he sent an additional one for Manolo de Huelva. Don Ramón told about the meeting: "Manolo took the capo/cejilla, hugged me and I never saw him again".

Thirty years later Manuel Gómez Velez (Manolo de Huelva) received another capo/cejilla from Buenos Aires (Juan Vargas was now living in Argentina). This capo/cejilla consisted of ebony and was equipped with initials, ornaments and gemstones. Manolo could not wait for the delivery and enthusiastically picked up the capo/cejilla himself. He wrote Juan a letter of thanks.

Vargas produced capos/cejillas from different woods and acrylic. They looked like the work of a jeweler.

Paco de Lucia ordered 100 capos/cejillas from Vargas. Sooner or later the masters of Flamenco guitar used a capos/cejillas made by Juan Vargas. Sabicas, Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, Paco Cepero, Tomatito and others.

In the 80's Vargas could not work like before. He finally stopped building on capos/cejillas in 1983.

The Flamenco guitarist Jose Urbano Cuesta "El Macareno" from Cordoba produces capodasters/cejillas in the style of Juan Vargas. Jose and Juan share the same passion, so Jose started to continue the Vargas tradition. There are models made of various materials with initials, ornaments and Swarovski stones. Individual designs are also possible. The workmanship and handling is very good. In the spirit of Vargas there are also the models that Juan Vargas made for Paco de Lucia, for example. I have some models of Jose in my collection - they are special.

DIE BERÜHMTEN KAPOs (CEJILLAs) DES JUAN VARGAS

Juan Vargas Muñoz stammte gebürtig aus Coin in der Provinz Malaga. In den dreißiger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts war er zunächst bei der Zeitung La Razón beschäftigt. Er war ein kreativer und ausgezeichneter Handwerker und machte sich mit einer eigenen Werkstatt selbstständig. Seine kleine Werkstatt befand sich hinter seinem Haus in der Strasse San Pedrito Nr. 78 in der Nachbarschaft San José de Flores.

Hier wurden seine ursprünglichen Kapodaster/Cejillas und Kastagnetten gefertigt.

Im Laufe der Jahre wurde Kunststoff populär und Vargas erweiterte seine Arbeiten um Kämme und Orhringe, die wie andere seiner Kreationen bald weltberühmt wurden. Der erste Kapodaster/Cejilla, der ihn bekannt machte trug die Initalien R. M. - Don Ramón Montoya. Der Kapo/Cejilla wurde aus Knochen gefertigt und mit Perlmutt Ornamenten versehen. Mit diesem versandte er einen weiteren für Manolo de Huelva. Don Ramón erzählte von dem Treffen: „Manolo nahm den Kapo, umarmte mich und ich sah ihn nie wieder“.

Dreißig Jahre später erhielt Manuel Gómez Velez (Manolo de Huelva) einen weiteren Kapo/Cejilla aus Buenos Aires (Juan Vargas lebte mittlerweile in Argentinien). Dieser Kapo/Cejilla bestand aus Ebenholz und war mit Initalien, Ornamenten und Schmucksteinen bestückt. Manolo konnte die Lieferung nicht abwarten und holte begeistert den Kapo/Cejilla selbst ab. Er schrieb Juan einen Dankesbrief.

Vargas produzierte Kapos/Cejillas aus verschiedenen Hölzern und Acryl. Sie sahen aus wie die Arbeiten eines Juweliers.

Paco de Lucia bestellte 100 Kapos/Cejillas bei Vargas. Früher oder später benutzten die Meister der Flamenco Gitarre einen Kapo/Cejilla von Juan Vargas. Sabicas, Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, Paco Cepero, Tomatito u.a.

In den 80er Jahren konnte Vargas nicht mehr so arbeiten wie zuvor. Er hörte 1983 endgültig auf Kapos/Cejillas zu bauen.

Der Flamenco Gitarrist Jose Urbano Cuesta „El Macareno“ aus Cordoba produziert Kapodaster/Cejilla im Stile von Juan Vargas. Jose und Juan teilen dieselbe Leidenschaft, so dass Jose anfing die Vargas Tradition fortzuführen. Es gibt Modelle aus diversen Materialen mit Initalien, Ornamenten und Swarovski Steinen. Individuelle Anfertigungen sind auch möglich. Die Verarbeitung und Handhabung ist sehr gut. Ganz im Sinne von Vargas gibt es auch die Modelle, die Juan Vargas z. B. für Paco de Lucia fertigte. Ich habe einige Modelle von Jose in meiner Sammlung - sie sind besonders.
