FELIPE CONDE | MORAITO CHICO RE-EDITION GUITAR
At the Musikmesse Frankfurt Felipe Conde presented a re-edition model of the Moraito Chico guitar from 1972. I had the opportunity to talk to Felipe Conde.
What is your inspiration to build a Replica of the Sobrinos de Domingo Esteso 1972 of Moraito Chico?
Diego del Morao - the son of Moraito Chico - came to me, brought his father's favorite guitar with him and asked, if we could reproduce this instrument. We then decided to build a limited number of 25 pieces. The guitar was originally built by Mariano and Faustino Conde for Moraito's father Juan Morao. Moraito had got this guitar from his father and always kept it and made many of his compositions on it. It is a traditional flamenco guitar with spruce top and back and sides of cypress (flamenca blanca). We have used very old wood. The guitar is feathery and very easy to play. It has mechanical pegs, which on the one hand offer the traditional appearance and on the other hand allow an easier "modern" tuning. The lacquer is a nitrocellulose lacquer and the scale is either 650mm or 664mm. The original scale is 650mm.
Is it an exact reproduction?
Yes, all dimensions, all internal work and rosette were taken into account. The "Media-Luna" headstock was kept in the style of the seventies as well as the label. The only difference is that mechanical pegs that optically correspond to the traditional wooden pegs were used to allow easier tuning.
How does it sound compared to the original one from 1972?
Diego del Morao said that it is very, very close to the original. Diego owns the first model of the limited series.
Who builds this instrument?
I do (Felipe Conde).
Will there be a version with rosewood back and sides (flamenca negra)?
No!
Auf der Musikmesse Frankfurt präsentierte Felipe Conde ein Re-Edition der Gitarre von Moraito Chico aus dem Jahre 1972. Ich hatte die Gelegenheit mit Felipe Conde zu sprechen.
Was ist Ihre Inspiration eine Replik der Sobrinos de Domingo Esteso 1972 von Moraito Chico zu bauen?
Diego del Morao – der Sohn von Moraito Chico – kam zu mir, brachte die Lieblingsgitarre seines Vaters mit und fragte, ob wir dieses Instrument reproduzieren können. Wir entschieden dann eine limitierte Anzahl von 25 Stück zu bauen. Die Gitarre wurde ursprünglich von Mariano und Faustino Conde für Moraitos Vater Juan Morao gebaut. Moraito hatte diese Gitarre vom Vater bekommen und immer behalten und viele seiner Kompositionen auf ihr getätigt. Es ist eine traditionelle Flamencogitarre mit Fichtendecke und Zargen und Boden aus Zypressenholz (Flamenca Blanca). Wir haben sehr altes Holz verbaut. Die Gitarre ist federleicht und sehr leicht zu spielen. Sie hat mechanische Stimmwirbel, die einerseits die traditionelle Optik bieten und andererseits ein einfaches „modernes“ Stimmen erlauben. Der Lack ist ein Nitrozelluloselack und die Mensur entweder 650mm oder 664mm. Beim Original ist die Mensur 650mm.
Handelt es sich um eine exakte Reproduktion?
Ja, alle Abmessungen, alle internen Arbeiten und die Rosette wurden berücksichtigt. Der „Media-Luna“ Kopf wurde im Stil der siebziger Jahre gehalten so wie das Etikett. Der einzige Unterschied ist, dass mechanische Stimmwirbel, die optisch den traditionellen Holzwirbeln entsprechen, verwendet wurden, um ein einfacheres Stimmen zu ermöglichen.
Wie klingt Sie im Vergleich zum Original von 1972?
Diego del Morao sagte, dass sie dem Original sehr, sehr ähnlich ist. Diego besitzt die das erste Modell der limitierten Serie.

Wird es auch eine Version mit Zargen und Boden aus Palisander geben (Flamenca Negra)?
Nein!
Are further re-edition models planned? For example, the Hermanos Conde of 1975 or 1980 that Paco de Lucia has played?
We are open to do so, but we have not planned it. We have all dimensions and plans and could make a reproduction.
Today's Conde guitars sound different than the guitars from the seventies or eighties. What is the concept behind it?
I do not know exactly why this is so. The construction is the same. Probably it is simply due to the wood or the age of the wood.
Are there any experiments with other materials, e.g. Carbon fiber?
We use other types of wood such as Pauferro and Cocobolo. We also built classical guitars with Nomex. The sound is more open and has a larger projection. We also built flamenco guitars with Nomex. I think Nomex is more suitable for classical guitars - for flamenco guitars I do not like the sound.
What are your plans for the future?
We strive to further develop and communicate innovations accordingly.

Sind weitere Re-Editions Modelle in Planung? Zum Beispiel die Hermanos Conde von 1975 oder 1980, die Paco de Lucia gespielt hat?
Wir sind offen dies zu tun, aber wir haben es nicht geplant. Wir haben alle Abmessungen und Pläne und könnten eine Reproduktion anfertigen.
Die heutigen Conde Gitarren klingen anders als die Gitarren aus den Siebzigern oder Achtzigern. Was ist das Konzept dahinter?
Das weiss ich auch nicht so genau warum das so ist. Die Bauweise ist identisch. Wahrscheinlich liegt es einfach am Holz bzw. am Alter des Holzes.
Gibt es Experimente mit anderen Materialien wie z.B. Kohlefaser?
Wir verwenden andere Holzarten wie Pauferro und Cocobolo. Weiterhin haben wir auch klassische Gitarren mit Nomex gebaut. Der Ton ist offener und hat eine grössere Projektion. Flamenco Gitarren mit Nomex haben wir auch gebaut. Ich denke Nomex ist eher für klassische Gitarren geeignet – für Flamenco Gitarren gefällt mir der Ton nicht unbedingt.
Was sind Ihre Pläne für die Zukunft?
Wir sind bestrebt uns weiter zu entwickeln und werden Innovationen dementsprechend kommunizieren.
